Sunflowers from Seed

Few plants are as rewarding for new gardeners as the sunflower.

Sowing: Sow seeds 1 inch deep directly into warm soil after the last frost. Space large varieties 12-18 inches apart.

Sun: Sunflowers need full sun and will turn their heads to follow it as they grow.

Water: Water regularly while young, then reduce once established. Tall varieties may need staking in windy spots.

Harvest: Leave heads on the stalk for the birds, or cut when petals drop and dry the seeds for snacking or replanting.
