Companion Planting Basics
Pair the right plants together for healthier crops and fewer pests.
Companion planting uses natural plant partnerships to boost growth and deter pests without chemicals.
Classic pairs: Tomatoes love basil, which repels certain pests and may improve flavor. Carrots and onions protect each other from flies.
The Three Sisters: Corn, beans and squash grown together support one another - corn gives beans a trellis, beans fix nitrogen, and squash shades out weeds.
Avoid: Keep beans away from onions and garlic, which can stunt their growth.
Start small: Try one or two pairings this season and note the difference.
